Occaneechi Replica Village Dedication Ceremony
December 17, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Inc. (OBSN) invites the public to a dedication ceremony for a new replica village at River Park, downtown Hillsborough, N.C. on Saturday, December 17 at 12 pm. The ceremony will include a Tutelo prayer, ceremonial smudging and brief remarks from representatives of OBSN.
For more than a year, members of the OBSN Tribal Council have worked with a group of dedicated citizens and representatives from Orange County Government (OCNCGov), Town of Hillsborough, NC Government and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough to plan for the construction of a new replica Occaneechi village in River Park along the Riverwalk. The new replica village is scheduled for completion in 2017.
Tribal Council member John “Blackfeather” Jeffries led the construction of an earlier replica village in the 1990s, which served as a popular destination for visitors and residents to learn the history of Piedmont North Carolina’s original peoples through pow wows, living history and educational programs.
OBSN, the smallest state-recognized Indian tribe in North Carolina, is based in Alamance County, where they host an annual pow wow each June on the Occaneechi Tribal Grounds at 4902 Dailey Store Rd in Burlington. Beginning November 2016 the OBSN Tribal Center is open Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. Please call ahead to make sure that the center is open: (919) 421-1317.
