The Apex Arts Council presents a five hour dance party featuring the famous CAROLINA SHAG!
Music and DJ services for this event will be provided by LOAFERS BEACH CLUB of Raleigh, featuring GARY GIBSON as DJ!
The Carolina Shag is a partner dance done primarily to Beach Music. The Shag is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions held across the nation.
The Carolina Shag originated along the beaches in Wilmington, North Carolina, during the 1940’s as a descendant of the dances like the “Carolina Jitterbug” and its predecessor the “Little Apple.” The basic step in the dance is a six count step danced in a slot. The rhythm is similar to six count swing, as in triple step, triple step, rock step.
The event will begin with a “Learn to Shag Beginner Class” for adults and children ten (10) years and up.
This will be followed by a Tap-Out Contest for non-professionals with a cash prize for the winners and runners up. If you would like to compete in this, please register prior to the event either online or upon arrival.
Our special guests for the event will be the King and Queen of Shag, Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee. Charlie was born and raised right here in Apex so they have a strong connection with our town. They will be doing Shag demonstrations, give us all a Pivot Clinic, and judge the dance contest. We will also have a drawing for the chance to dance with the winner’s choice of either Charlie or Jackie.
The climax of the day will be a dance contest for professionals, judged by Charlie and Jackie, with a cash prize for the winner and the presentation of the first annual Womble Trophy.
Throughout the day we will have periods of open dancing to music provided by a professional DJ.
